Yeast infection; those two dreaded words. Women are all too familiar with
them, men don’t want to talk about them, and most people lack sufficient
education regarding the topic. Yeast infections are caused by Candida albicans,
a type of yeast commonly found in the human body. 75% of all women have at least
one yeast infection in their lifetime. The most common type of yeast infection
is a vaginal yeast infection. A vaginal yeast infection usually manifest through
marked itching in and around the vagina, redness, swelling, raised red bumps, a
white (often curd like) discharge, and discomfort during sex. If you have never
had a yeast infection before it is important to see your doctor for initial
diagnosis. After the initial diagnosis it is considered normal to self diagnose
and get treatment over the counter. There are two concerns with self diagnosis
however: recurrent yeast infections (4 or more a year) can be a sign of an
underlying illness and self medicating when you do not actually have a yeast
infection can create resistant yeast, making treatments less effective over
time.
